May Day Rally 2007

Posted in News, Photojournalism by Mohamed Abdulla Shafeeg on May 1, 2007

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) today held a rally to protest the lack of national labour laws. Over thousands workers in Male’ joined hundreds of Party members and supporters to march from the South West harbour area to the artificial beach on the eastern shore of Male’.

The Maldives does not have trade unions and labour laws that guarantee minimum wages, overtime, cost of living allowances, and limits on working hours.

The MDP held the first May Day rally ever marked in the history of Maldives last year. The rally ended with jubilation for thousands of people who gathered and marched on the streets. Part of the success of the rally can be attributed to the sheer number of people it attracted and due to the fact that it came to an end without violence or confrontations with the police.
